During 2005-2006, I wrote five articles for a portion of its editorial page which the Eau Claire Leader Telegram[1] reserved for opinions which seemed to warrant more than the typical "letter to the editor" format. I have assembled them all in one pdf and listed each below:
- "What if taxes aren't the problem?" In this article, I expressed the view that having high taxes did not ensure that your state would rank poorly for livability.
- "Rice Lake schools failing? It sure doesn't seem like it." This article used the "failure" of Rice Lake (Wisconsin) schools to meet the standards of the "No Child Left Behind Act" to question the reasonables of the act and, even, its very premise.
- "If our health care is best, why aren't we living longer?" In response to the claim in 2005 that Social Security was in danger, this article pointed out that Social Security was fine; it was Medicare that was in trouble and the reason for that was the unreasonably expensive cost of health care in the United States.
- "We didn't prepare troops to win." As a veteran of the "cold war" who experienced the grossly inadequate resources provided the Army at that time, I took great exception to the way the military was asked to do far more for Gulf War II than it had for Gulf War I and do it with about half the resources of the former.
- "What will be the `Mobro' of global warming?" This article took the view that the those espousing the belief that 'global warming' was a thing were not being completely transparent and objective about their findings.
